Asphalt shingles are about 80% of what we install — and for good reason. Modern architectural shingles, installed to spec on a properly-ventilated attic, routinely outlive their nominal warranty. They're the best price per year you can put on a home.
Why we don't sell 3-tab anymore
Three-tab shingles cost about 30% less than architectural, last about 40% less time, and look about 60% worse from the curb. The math has been bad for fifteen years and most NJ insurance carriers now charge higher premiums on 3-tab roofs. We removed them from our quotes years ago.
Architectural vs designer — what's the real difference
Architectural (laminated) shingles like GAF Timberline HDZ are the default for ~85% of homes — heavyweight, dimensional, 30+ year rating, around $7–9 per square foot installed. Designer/luxury lines (CertainTeed Presidential, Owens Corning Berkshire) mimic slate or shake at 30–50% more cost — worth it on architecturally-distinct homes, harder to justify on a standard colonial.
