Three Bergen Counties, Three Different Roofs

Bergen is the most populous county in New Jersey, and the roofing work splits cleanly into three bands. The southern boroughs — Garfield, Lodi, Elmwood Park, Saddle Brook — are post-war single-family and two-family on tight lots, where most roofs are on their second or third asphalt life and a replacement often means coordinating access and staging between neighbors. The central townships like Teaneck and Fair Lawn bring established Tudors and colonials: steeper pitches, more valleys and dormers, and flashing details that decide whether the roof lasts.

North of that, the townships along and above the ridge — Wyckoff, Englewood Cliffs, Alpine, Tenafly — run larger custom homes on premium systems: natural slate, cedar shake, copper, and standing-seam metal. Those carry a different install discipline from an asphalt re-roof, and the transitions and metalwork are where the risk sits, because matching an existing slate or copper profile is a sourcing job rather than a trip to the supply house. Wind Exposure Along the Palisades Ridge

The eastern edge of the county sits on the Palisades, and the exposure shows up on roofs. Ridgelines and upper slopes take more wind than a sheltered interior lot, which lifts shingles at the corners, works flashing loose over time, and finds any edge detail that was fastened short. On the premium systems common in that part of the county, wind damage is rarely a simple shingle swap — matching slate, cedar, or a copper profile takes sourcing, and that is part of the scope from the start rather than a surprise later.

Two-Family and Commercial Work in the Borough Centers

Bergen's borough centers carry a real share of two-family homes and small commercial buildings, and both bring flat or low-slope sections into what looks from the street like a pitched-roof job. Those are membrane systems — welded TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen — priced and detailed differently from shingle work, and the seam where a low-slope section meets the main pitched roof is where most of these leaks actually begin. On a two-family, replacement also means coordinating between owners and around tenants, which we plan for rather than discover.
